Skales v12.8.2 - Mood

Skales 12.8.2 lets your Obsidian vault and your assistant finally live in the same folder: point Skales at the vault itself and every answer reads the notes as they are on disk, writes new ones without ever overwriting yours, and understands "look in my Work vault". The companion's mood is no longer hidden on the Memory page but stands beside you while you work, warm when things go well and cool when they do not, with an honest account of what moved it today. Telegram becomes a real conversation: one message that writes itself as Skales thinks, answers that arrive exactly once, and files that arrive as files. And the app got calmer and quicker where it counts, messages you type while Skales is still thinking queue up and are answered together, opening the app no longer greets you with a wave of pop-ups, and a long draft no longer slows the whole window down.

We've just released Skales v12.8.2, bringing some significant improvements to how Skales interacts with your notes and how you understand its state.

Your Obsidian Vault is Now Live

Skales now directly reads from your Obsidian vault folder, rather than working with a snapshot. This means any changes you make in Obsidian are immediately visible to Skales. You can point Skales to multiple vaults, name them, and even ask it to search within a specific one. The Memory page will show a graph of your chosen vault, and you'll have the option to remove older imported copies. This integration is in beta, and connecting your first vault will prompt you to consider token costs for long notes and your backup responsibilities.

Skales Writes, Never Overwrites

Skales can now create new notes or append to existing ones, either at the end or under a specific heading. Crucially, it will not overwrite an existing note. If a creation request would result in overwriting, Skales will refuse and suggest appending instead, safeguarding your note history.

Where Notes Land is a Setting

You can now configure where Skales saves new notes. Set the target folder, filename pattern, note template, and a tag for all files Skales creates. Placeholders like {title}, {date}, and {content} can be used. If you leave these empty, notes will be saved in the vault root with their own titles.

Your Notes, Answered

Skales now reads frontmatter and #tags along with the body of your notes. You can narrow searches with tags like "tag:project", and Skales will return notes that link to and from the queried note.

Conscious: Mood in View

The companion's mood is now visible in a row pinned above the navigation, so you can see it while you work. The colour indicates the mood (warm for good progress, cool otherwise), and its fullness and speed reflect energy levels. This mood changes in real-time during conversations. Hovering over it reveals details about what influenced it and what might be missing, such as long silences or days without finished tasks. This feature is a child of the companion switch in Settings, Memory, and it will not notify you or start conversations.

The Mood Keeps a Daily Log

The mood now keeps a rolling log of the last two days, detailing events that influenced it. This includes finished goals, missed goals, stuck runs, long silences, and stretches of work. Resetting the mood on the Memory page also clears this daily log.

Under every reply sits the price of the session, read from the provider or from the price table, with the sub-agents' bill included; a ceiling you set in Goals stops a run before the next paid step and asks you three things - continue, take a cheaper model, or stop - in the chat, in the Code window, in Iris and on the phone. A typed "stop" is honoured before the first request leaves the machine, and a stopped run says so in its own bubble instead of pretending it finished. Ask for something big and Skales can hand parts of it to sub-agents, each in its own checkout of your repository, and collect the results. Under every reply sits a context meter that names what filled the window: the system prompt, the tool definitions, your skills, your memory and the conversation itself. Updates Sep 2, 2026 Skales v12.9.21 - Cockpit 2.0 Cockpit 2.0 is named for the screen it replaces. What used to be two stacked tab bars, a second title and a row of icon chips is now one board: everything that stands, in four columns, with goals, your own tasks, Autopilot tasks and schedules as cards you can filter, drag and act on. One head, one action. The phone got the same board in 2.9.21, and a computer on an older version still fills it from what it can tell rather than showing an empty screen.
