Skales vs. AnythingLLM
Document chat with agent features vs. a full desktop agent.
Credit where due: AnythingLLM (61k+ stars) also ships a free one-click desktop app - it is not a Docker monster, and we will not pretend otherwise. If your main job is chatting with documents and building RAG workspaces over local models, it is a strong choice.
The difference is agent depth. AnythingLLM is a workspace paradigm: documents in, answers out, with lighter agent skills around it. Skales is an agent paradigm: background goals that keep running with the chat closed, OS-level tools (files, browser, calendar, email, computer use), a coding IDE, a media studio and a Buddy that executes multi-step tasks on your desktop.
Choose Skales if…
- You want an agent that does multi-step work across your OS, not only your documents.
- You want goals running in the background, a coding agent and media generation.
Choose AnythingLLM if…
- Your core need is private document Q&A / RAG over a folder of PDFs.
- You want multi-user server deployments for a small team workspace.
