Hermes Agent (Nous Research, 192k+ GitHub stars) is the fast follower in the self-hosted agent wave: a one-line curl install, no Docker required, happy on a 1 GB VPS. For developers who want a personal agent on a server, it is one of the cleanest options.

It is still a terminal-first, dev-first product: you SSH in, run a setup wizard, bring a model with a 64k context window, and decide how much of its famous "YOLO mode" you can stomach. An April 2026 security audit found 4 critical and 9 high findings in default configurations. Skales targets the opposite end: a signed GUI app on the machine you already use, safe defaults, and an audience that includes your kids and your parents.
