First-launch notes

Two clicks of bureaucracy, max.

What Windows, macOS and Ubuntu may show you on first launch - and why it's fine.

Windows SmartScreen

The Windows build isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen shows a one-time "unrecognized app" notice. Click More info → Run anyway. Defender may scan the EXE for 30–60 seconds on first launch - normal. Verify the SHA-512 if you like; a signed build is on the roadmap.

macOS: signed & notarized

Skales is signed with an Apple Developer ID certificate (Mario Simic, Q5ASU2DB6P) and notarized by Apple - macOS opens it like any trusted app. Drag to Applications, double-click, done. No warnings, no workarounds.

Linux & Ubuntu 24.04+

Prefer the .deb on Debian/Ubuntu/Mint - it keeps the Chromium sandbox on under Ubuntu 24.04's AppArmor rules. Everyone else: chmod +x the AppImage and run. Details in INSTALL-LINUX.md ↗

Download FAQ

Before you click.

Which download is right for my Mac?

Apple Silicon (M1-M4) Macs use the arm64 DMG; Intel Macs use the x64 DMG. Skales is signed with an Apple Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it like any app from the App Store: drag to Applications, double-click, done. No warnings, no right-click tricks.

Why does the first Windows launch take a moment?

On first launch Windows Defender scans the executable - 30 to 60 seconds is normal. SmartScreen may also show an "unrecognized app" notice because the Windows build is not code-signed yet: click More info, then Run anyway. A signed build is on the roadmap.

Which Linux package should I pick?

Debian, Ubuntu and Mint users should prefer the .deb package - it keeps the Chromium sandbox enabled under Ubuntu 24.04+ (AppArmor). Every other distro runs the AppImage: make it executable and start it. See INSTALL-LINUX.md in the GitHub repo for the Ubuntu 24.04 notes.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes - Skales Mobile is on Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS). Pair it with your desktop via QR code over an end-to-end encrypted relay and your phone reaches that machine's full tool set - or run it standalone with 49 native mobile tools and an on-device model that answers offline. Details on skales.app/mobile.

How do updates work?

Skales checks for updates silently in the background and notifies you in the dashboard. One click updates the app - no terminal, no reinstall. You can verify every release against the SHA-512 checksums in skales.app/updates/latest.json.
